Whether or not you are attuned to these sounds, I recommend reading the review that Ann Powers did for the New York Times on the Vision Festival. (Which is sometimes described as the Visions Festival FWIW.) A little more than a year ago I wrote a review of an interesting book called Weird Like Us: My Bohemian America that was authored by none other than Ann Powers.
