2002-04-25 (Thursday) - 2:57 p.m. Ann Powers says in today’s Slate, “the most painful day of my life was when the trade reviews of my book Weird Like Us arrived—all negative; I wept harder than I thought possible and actually wished for a psychotic break with reality.” I guess the fact that Bad Subjects isn’t a trade journal gets my review off the hook although I doubt it was one of the “Later, better reviews” that Powers writes, “helped the book and me.” Actually, after rereading the review I am struck by how well it is written and how I said what I wanted to get across. I don’t deny how engrossing Weird Like Us was to read while at the same time not glossing over the book’s problems. And I do like Powers’ work a lot and recommend this current Slate series, which looks at her current life rock and roll curator of the post-journalist variety. The five part “diary” began on Monday and ends tomorrow. And don’t forget her review for the New York Times of last year’s Vision Festival. (A review I first mentioned last year on June 6, FWIW.) Speaking of time, I created this log a little over a year ago. The first entry was dated April 20. While I plan to continue creating new entries, the updates will be infrequent and thus I’ve changed the log’s title. The main purpose of these pages will be to promote other work that I've done.
