This past Friday, while waiting for an elevator, I was talking about movies with a friend and the preeminent piece of cinema known as Pearl Harbor came up. Neither of us had seen the movie but that didn't stop either of us from talking about it. At one point I complained that the movie had not included enough about the heroic interment of Japanese Americans. My friend added that there should have been more about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Eventually we both came together to an understanding that the Japs really deserved everything that they had gotten and probably a whole lot more. We weren't laughing, although of course both of us weren't serious about what we were saying. Eventually we boarded an elevator along with a white gentleman in his 40s who listened to this conversation with a look of puzzlement upon his face. He looked especially closely as my friend -who is Filipina- as if he was trying to figure out if she was actually white or something. Once we got out of the elevator, my friend and I started laughing. email
