2001-10-15 (Monday) - 11:21 a.m.

This morning I saw a guy wearing a brown jacket with an embroidered bald eagle on upper left hand side in the place where a breast pocket might go. Below the eagle, were the words “God Bless America” and then below that, “9-11-01.”

All I have to say is hasn’t this whole patriotism/my country is better than your country/He loves my country more than your country sentiment gone a bit too far?

Disagree with me if you will, but there is no reason for people in the United States to show patriotism ever, and certainly not at this point in time, unless you want to say “we” run the world and will do whatever it takes to keep things that way.

The U.S. does run the world as much as any country could do in this day and age and, for that reason, U.S. patriotism is an inherently impressive ideology that doesn’t stand for loving the country so much as it stands for dominating the people and governments in other parts of the world. When the U.S. actually has to worry about losing a real war that it didn’t provoke –and not just withholding the options of nuking those evil people is some other land- then patriotism might be a humane response but not when the U.S. is as powerful as it currently is. (So, if you are one of those who like to call me a terrorist or a traitor, just think of me as wanting to see the U.S. fall in power to the point where I might have some semblance of respect for patriotism in the Home of the Brave.)

Waving the flag won’t do a damn thing to do more damage around the world or bring the terrorists –i.e. those who commit acts of violence that the U.S. does not like- to justice. What it will do is say that it is o.k. to abuse and beat up people around the world if the U.S. does because Lady Liberty should have the liberty to do whatever the hell it wants to do.

That isn’t logic or pride in one’s country. That is just sick.
